Historic Wilmington Foundation Legacy Architectural Salvage Artist-in-Residence

Deborah Helms' creative journey as an artist was strongly influenced by her grandmother Ruby, with whom she spent many creative summers as a child. Deborah’s love of anything old, worn, torn, and rusty is the soul of her art.

Using salvaged objects such as door and window hardware, chandelier crystals, and other found objects, combined with bits and pieces of pre-1920s ephemera, Deborah creates unique mixed media art and assemblage jewelry. She layers components for a particular piece of art until she finds the right combination and complement of elements:

“My goal as an artist is to take an eclectic mix of items and textures and incorporate them into a cohesive piece of art that tells a story.”
